This is a short plan of actions in case you want to update your linux (debian like) kernel to the latest available version. 1. Download latest STABLE kernel at www.kernel.org
wget <url>.tar.xz 2. Unpack unxz <downloaded>.tar.xz 3. Install libncurses5-dev, kernel-package sudo apt-get install libncurses5-dev kernel-package 4. Navigate into unpacked linux folder cd linux-3.17/ 5. Copy AS ROOT user boot configuration and save it as .config cp /boot/config-`uname -r` .config 6. Make configurations make menuconfig Important: You must choose “SELECT – ENABLE LOADABLE MODULE SUPPORT“. Select: Generic Driver Options, Network Device Support, Input Device support Load the .config file from previous step 7. Make sure you will do a clean build of kernel make-kpkg clean 8. Start compiling export CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=3 sudo make-kpkg --append-to-version "-mycoolkernel" --revision "1" --initrd kernel_image kernel_headers It will take some long long time, I mean really long. 9. Go one folder above. You should see a deb package there. cd .. ls -l linux-*.deb 10. Install image file dpkg -i linux-image-<your_deb_file_name_here>.deb 11. Install headers file dpkg -i linux-headers-<your_deb_file_name_here>.deb 12. Reboot 13. Remove unused kernel from OS: apt-get remove <linux-image-unused_version_number>
